Recollections of the Late Lloyd N. Unsell 3/17/2007 |
| The U.S. oil and natural gas industry has lost one of its greatest advocates and historians. Lloyd N. Unsell, past president of the Independent Petroleum Association of America -- and the only recipient of the Lone Star Steel Chief Roughneck Award who was not an oil or gas producer -- passed away April 7, 2007, at age 84. In 2004, AOGHS proudly posted Lloyd's introduction and first chapter of his fascinating "recollections" -- the insights of a man who will be long remembered by his industry. AOGHS expresses its deepest sympathy to the Unsell family. Lloyd was the very first member of this historical society. more...

Energy Educators to Meet in
Houston, Nov. 12 to 14, 2008

Azerbaijan Plans Oil Museum
U.S. Museums Host Delegates
The visiting delegation included (left to right) Teymur Mahmudov, Human Resources Department of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR); Amina Malikova, Head of International Relations Department of the Museum Center; Xalik Mammadov, Vice President of SOCAR on Human Resources, Regulations and Information Technologies; Azada Huseynova, Head of the Museum Affairs Department at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; and Jalil Huseynov, Deputy Principal of the Academy of Arts.
The Azerbaijan Republic is creating a new oil history museum, park and energy education complex for its capital Baku – and U.S. oil and gas museum directors and energy educators are playing a role in this historic undertaking.
On Feb. 13, the Azeri delegation, hosted by the American Oil & Gas Historical Society, completed 10-day mission to museums and leading energy education institutions in Texas and Oklahoma. Sponsored by the state oil company, SOCAR, five delegates met with museum directors, exhibit designers, and other energy education experts.
SOCAR Vice President Xalik Mammadov led the fact-finding delegation, which traveled more than 1,000 miles.
After meeting with the Houston-Baku Sister Cities Association leadership on Feb. 4 in Houston, the delegation held discussions with representatives of the:
§ Wiess Energy Hall, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Houston, TX;
§ Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX;
§ Raindrop Turkevi House, Houston, TX
§ Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum, Galveston, TX;
§ Texas Energy Museum, Beaumont, TX;
§ Spindletop/Gladys City Boomtown Museum, Beaumont, TX;
§ Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, Fort Worth, TX;
§ Museum Arts, Inc., Dallas, TX;
§ Oklahoma City Petroleum Club, Oklahoma City, OK;
§ Oklahoma Historical Society History Center; Oklahoma City, OK
§ Devon Energy Oil and Gas Park, Oklahoma City, OK;
§ Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Geoscience Center, Tulsa, OK;
§ Phillips Petroleum Company Museum, Bartlesville, OK;
§ Oklahoma City Museum of Fine Arts, Oklahoma City, OK.
Azerbaijan’s history of oil and related technologies – the earliest in the world – deserve international recognition, explained SOCAR Vice President Xalik Mammadov.

In 1846—more than a decade before the United States made its famous oil discovery in Titusville, Pennsylvania—Azerbaijan drilled the world’s first oil well in the fields of Bibi-Heybat, near Baku. By 1901, when the equally famous gusher came in at Spindletop Hill in Beaumont, Texas, the Baku region produced more than half of the world's oil.
On Feb. 4, the first day of the delegation’s U.S. visit, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree for the creation of the oil museum in Baku. The decree “is linked with rich tradition of oil industry of Azerbaijan, its significance in strengthening independence and sustainable growth of country’s potential and invaluable contribution” in world history.

Above, Xalik Mammadov, Vice President of SOCAR on Human Resources, Regulations and Information Technologies and Jalil Huseynov, Deputy Principal of the Academy of Arts, met with Paul Bernhard of the Houston Museum of Natural Science on Feb. 5. Below, the delegation met with Oklahoma Historical Society President Robert Blackburn (far left) at the Oklahoma History Center, Oklahoma City, on Feb. 9.

More about the international delegation’s visit to U.S. oil museums will be featured in the March 2008 issue of the historical society’s quarterly newsletter, the Petroleum Age.
New Date for AOGHS
Energy Education Conference
Thanks to a partnership with nation’s largest association representing independent oil and natural gas producers, the date of the American Oil & Gas Historical Society (AOGHS) 2008 annual energy education conference has been moved from summer to the fall.
The third annual AOGHS Conference & Field Trip will be held Nov. 12 - 14, 2008, in Houston, Texas -- immediately following the Nov. 10-12 Annual Meeting of the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) at the Westin Galleria.
“IPAA, an organization founded in 1929, has generously offered to assist the society with registration and other important details of the conference, which continues to grow," notes Bruce Wells AOGHS executive director. "IPAA member participation also adds a new and key element to our mission of sharing energy education ideas and strategies.”
State and national experts from Pennsylvania to California will gather to share their latest techniques and workshop strategies for improving energy education, especially about petroleum exploration and production (June 2007 Petroleum Age). Oil and gas museum directors will share experiences about exhibits, outreach and community events.
The AOGHS conference will include a Nov. 14 a motor coach field trip to oil museums in Galveston and Beaumont.
“This national conference is designed for those professionals who ‘teach the teachers’ and will include panel discussions, demonstrations, and a tour of the Wiess Energy Hall at the Houston Museum of Natural Science,” Wells explains.
“Our outstanding participation at the 2007 conference in Oklahoma City – including leaders from the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board, the National Energy Foundation, Derricks to Desks, and the state energy education programs – promises an even greater exchange of ideas in Houston, the world's energy capital.”
Energy education program practitioners, oil and natural gas museum directors, and representatives from the Oil 150 Steering Committee of Oil City, Pa., will discuss new partnership possibilities for the petroleum industry's sesquicentennial next year.
Nov. 14 field trip will feature demonstrations at the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum in Galveston, and two energy museums in Beaumont. Conference sponsors include the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), the American Petroleum Institute (API), and the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers.
For a preliminary conference schedule and participation information, call (202) 857-4785 or e-mail Bruce Wells at bawells@aoghs.org.
