The Petroleum Age, 2004 - 2008

The Petroleum Age quarterly newsletter supports the AOGHS public education mission. The first issue was published in 2004. Below are complete issues. Each 16-page issue is a PDF -- and may take a few minutes to download. All are worth the wait.

March 2008

In this issue: Hollywood Goes Roughneck - Among the screen credits for the movie "There Will Be Blood" are oil and gas museums, where filmakers researched the oil industry. Azerbaijanis Visit Museums - The Azerbaijan Republic is creating an oil history museum and energy education center in Baku. In February, AOGHS hosts delegates on a tour of museums in Texas and Oklahoma. Cantankerous Combustion - Of the 4,200 U.S. automobiles sold in 1900, gasoline powered less than 1,000. In November of that year, America's first national automobile show opens in New York's Madison Square Garden.

In this issue: Centennial Issue - A stamp issued in 1959 celebrated the 100th anniversary of  Col. Edwin L. Drake's  world-changing discovery. Texas Holiday Lights - The East Texas oilfield discovered in 1930 prepares for the holidays by illuminating historic derricks. Oilfield Historian Honored - President Bush presents a National Humanities Medal to Pauline Schultz.

In this issue: Last of the Gushers - In 1922, it took a Texas wildcatter's experience and ingenuity to create a workable device to prevent oil well blowouts. In this issue: The Conroe Crater - In 1932, wildcatter George W. Strake discovered the prolific Conroe, Texas oilfield. In January 1933, it erupted in flame. Dramatic Oil Company - Less than two years before he assassinated President Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth formed an oil company.

The Early Days of H.L. Hunt, Dad & Doc - C.M. "Dad" Joiner, geologist A.D. "Doc" Lloyd and Haroldson Lafayette "H.L."Hunt discover of the Great East Texas Oilfield in 1930. Vaseline & Mabel's Eyelashes - In 1872, Robert Chesebrough patented a method for turning goop from Pennsylvania oil wells into a balm he called Vaseline. In 1913, Thomas Williams became intrigued when his sister, Maybel, mixed it with a darkening agent. Before long, he was selling "Las-Brow-Ine," which would become Maybeline.

In this issue: An Oil Family Album - A history of the Morris family. First Lone Star Discovery - In December 1859, less than for months after oil's discovery in Pennsylvania, Lyne Taliaferro Barnet began searching for oil in East Texas. The Story of Tom Slick, Wilcatter - By 1930, in the Oklaoma City field alone, Slick was drilling 45 wells with the capacity to produce 200,000 barrels of crude daily.

Discovering Indian Territory Oil - In 1897, the Nellie Johnstone No. 1 well ushers in the oil era for the Oklahoma Territory. Aero Views of Early Oil Towns - Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler has the greatest number of panoramic or Birds-Eye View maps in the collection of  the Library of Congress. Many of what he called Aero views captures the communities of America's earliest oilfields.

Petroleum Age - Vol. 1 No. 1

March 2004

In this issue: The Kansas Six - Six museums in Kansas exhibit the history of more than 110 years of oil and natural gas producing fields. Discovering Florida's First Oil Well -  After decades of dry holes, the first commercial well in Florida, Sunniland No. 1, came in on Sept. 26, 1943, near Naples. The well was later later restored and donated to the state by Humble Oil Co. Colonel Drake in Schoolrooms - Thanks to the efforts of the Drake Well Museum, children learn about Pennsylvania's oil history.
